Ukraine launches large-scale drone attack on Russia, killing at least six; Russian strikes kill five in Ukraine
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday in one of the largest aerial attacks of the war, killing at least six people. Russia's Ministry of Defense said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, with roughly 600 detected heading toward Moscow. Separately, Russian strikes killed at least five people and wounded others across multiple Ukrainian cities.
How the coverage split
NPR reported three Ukrainian cities struck (Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, Kyiv) but did not include the Zaporizhzhia deaths, putting the Russian-side civilian toll in sharper relief.
AP included the additional deaths of a man and woman in Zaporizhzhia, raising the total Ukrainian death toll reported and providing broader geographic coverage of Russian strikes.
What both sides skipped
Neither source reported any Ukrainian government statement explaining the strategic objectives of the August 16 attack specifically, or whether it was coordinated with any Western partners.
