Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized in Florida with Pneumonia, Breathing on His Own After Ventilator Use

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 81, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition at a Florida hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia and placed on mechanical ventilation. Spokesperson Ted Goodman stated Monday that Giuliani is now breathing on his own and is being monitored as a precautionary measure. Goodman attributed complications in Giuliani's condition to restrictive airway disease linked to his exposure to dust and toxins during the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attack.

Giuliani first showed signs of illness publicly on Friday, when he appeared on his nightly online talk show "America's Mayor Live" coughing and told viewers his voice was "a little under the weather," adding that he would speak more quietly than usual. His most recent episode of "The Rudy Giuliani Show" on LindellTV aired the previous Wednesday, according to CNN, which noted he had missed several episodes in April.

Spokesperson Ted Goodman announced Giuliani's hospitalization Sunday and provided further details Monday. "This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition," Goodman said in a statement carried by all three outlets. Goodman added that Giuliani's family and primary medical provider were at his side, and that the former mayor is now breathing without the ventilator.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social calling Giuliani "a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR," and used the occasion to repeat allegations about the 2020 election. The Associated Press noted that Trump and his backers lost dozens of lawsuits alleging fraud in that election, and that numerous recounts and audits found no signs of significant wrongdoing or error. Former Mayor Eric Adams issued a statement wishing Giuliani "strength, good health, and a full recovery," saying the moment "rises above politics."
