Jill Biden says she feared Joe Biden was having a stroke during 2024 debate against Trump
Former first lady Jill Biden said in a CBS News "Sunday Morning" interview, a clip of which was released Wednesday, that she was frightened watching her husband debate Donald Trump in June 2024 because she thought he might be having a stroke. Biden said she had "never, ever seen Joe like that before or since." Joe Biden ended his presidential campaign less than a month after the debate.
Former first lady Jill Biden described her reaction to President Joe Biden's June 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump, saying in a CBS News "Sunday Morning" interview that watching the debate "scared me to death." The clip was released on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
"I was frightened," Jill Biden said in the interview. "Because I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. I don't know what happened. As I watched it, I thought 'Oh my God, he's having a stroke.'" Joe Biden suspended his presidential campaign less than a month after the debate took place.
Both sources reported that the debate prompted Democrats to begin pressuring Joe Biden to step aside, and that Biden allies — including Jill Biden — had offered reassurances at the time. Politico noted that in a post-debate campaign event, Jill Biden told supporters that her husband "did such a great job," a contrast with the fear she described privately. CNN's coverage focused primarily on her emotional reaction and the stroke concern, leading with the "terrified" framing from its own broadcast.
