Fox News Poll finds most U.S. voters consider AI regulation urgent, favor safeguards over innovation
A Fox News poll conducted May 15–18, 2026, among 1,002 registered voters found that roughly 8 in 10 consider federal action on AI regulation extremely or very urgent. By a 61-point margin, voters prioritize protecting the public interest (80%) over promoting innovation (19%). The poll was conducted jointly by Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), with a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points.
A Fox News poll released this week found that 77% of registered voters consider federal AI regulation urgent, with 40% calling it extremely urgent and 37% very urgent. The survey of 1,002 registered voters was conducted May 15–18, 2026, using live interviewers on landlines and cellphones, as well as online interviews via text invitation.
When voters were asked who should bear responsibility for AI regulation, 54% said the tech industry should have a great deal of responsibility, compared to 51% who said the same of the federal government. State governments were cited by 39% of respondents. The findings suggest voters see shared accountability between industry and government rather than a clear primary regulator.
On the question of regulatory priorities, 80% of respondents said regulations should focus on protecting the public interest, while just 19% favored promoting innovation — a 61-point gap. Partisan differences on this question were modest: Democrats (83%) and independents (82%) favored public protection at slightly higher rates than Republicans (77%), though majorities of all partisan groups agreed.
