Five killed in I-95 bus crash in Virginia after driver failed to slow for work zone
A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, killed five people and injured dozens more around 2:35 a.m. Friday. Virginia State Police said a bus failed to slow for southbound traffic approaching a work zone and struck six vehicles. Three people were transported to hospitals in critical condition.
The crash occurred near the Quantico exit at the 146-mile marker on I-95 South in Stafford County. According to Virginia State Police, the bus — operated by E&P Travel and traveling from New York to North Carolina — did not slow as traffic backed up ahead of a work zone, striking six vehicles.
Four of the five people killed were in cars struck by the bus. Fox News reported that a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, riding in a car ahead of the one directly hit by the bus, died along with a 45-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman after their vehicle caught fire; all four were from Massachusetts, according to that report. A 25-year-old woman in the car immediately in front of the bus was also killed. At least 44 people were taken to area hospitals, with three in critical condition.
The bus driver, identified by Fox News as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, was injured in the crash. Virginia State Police said charges are pending. Fox News reported that Dong is a naturalized citizen originally from China who obtained his commercial driver's license in New York two years ago.
