Knicks defeat Spurs 105-104 in Game 2, take 2-0 NBA Finals lead heading to New York
The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 105-104 in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Friday night in San Antonio, taking a 2-0 series lead. Jalen Brunson hit a go-ahead free throw with 9.5 seconds remaining after a Victor Wembanyama turnover, and Wembanyama's final jumper at the buzzer bounced off the rim. The series now shifts to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Monday night.
Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead New York, while Brunson and Mikal Bridges each finished with 20 points. Wembanyama, who was largely absent in the first half, finished with 29 points for San Antonio, and De'Aaron Fox added 20. Knicks coach Mike Brown described it as "What a ballgame," and Towns said, "New York City showed up. The fans showed up. The energy showed up. And we found a way to get it done."
The game's decisive sequence came in the final minute. Wembanyama's three-point play with 57 seconds left gave San Antonio its first lead in nearly two full quarters at 104-102. Brunson answered on the next possession — just his seventh basket in 24 field goal attempts — to tie it. After OG Anunoby grabbed a rebound with 30 seconds left and the Knicks called timeout, the Spurs forced a stop but Wembanyama then threw the ball away. Brunson was fouled, made the go-ahead free throw, and the Spurs' final attempt — Fox setting up Wembanyama for a jumper — came off the rim.
The Knicks have now won 13 consecutive games, described by both outlets as the second-longest winning streak by any team in NBA playoff history. New York also became only the third team to take the first two games of an NBA Finals on the road, joining the 1993 Chicago Bulls and the 1995 Houston Rockets — both of which went on to win the championship. The Knicks are seeking their first title since 1973.
