OpenAI files confidential IPO paperwork as Anthropic and SpaceX also prepare to go public
OpenAI has confidentially filed for an initial public offering, though the company said it has not decided on timing. The filing comes after rival Anthropic announced plans to go public and ahead of SpaceX's planned market debut. OpenAI was last valued at $852 billion following a $122 billion fundraising round in March.
OpenAI's confidential IPO filing positions the company for what CNN described as potentially "the most highly anticipated market debut in recent history," while also opening the company's finances to public scrutiny for the first time. Because the filing is confidential, the number of shares and offering price have not been disclosed.
OpenAI stated in a post on its newsroom page that it had not settled on a timeline, noting "it may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company," while adding that the filing "gives us the option to go public sooner if that ends up being best."
The three concurrent listings — OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX — are expected to represent hundreds of billions of dollars in combined market value, according to CNN. Analysts and investors see the cluster of offerings as a test of broader market appetite for AI firms at a moment when tech stocks have faced selling pressure amid questions about whether recent share-price run-ups have gone too far.
