Elon Musk's Business Empire Spans Electric Vehicles, Rockets, AI, and Brain Implants
Elon Musk, identified as the world's richest person, holds CEO roles at multiple major companies including SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink, while also founding The Boring Company. SpaceX went public on Friday in what the Associated Press described as the biggest initial public offering in history, closing at just below $161 per share for a total market value of $2.1 trillion. Musk earlier this year merged SpaceX with his artificial intelligence company xAI, which also houses the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Elon Musk's corporate holdings span electric vehicles, rocket launches, brain-computer interfaces, underground tunnels, social media, and artificial intelligence. SpaceX, which he founded in 2002, now serves as a parent entity for Starlink, xAI, and X, the platform he purchased for $44 billion in 2022.
SpaceX's IPO on Friday drew substantial market attention. The company closed at just under $161 per share, producing a market capitalization of $2.1 trillion — the largest debut in IPO history, according to the AP. Despite that reception, SpaceX reported a net operating loss of $2.6 billion last year. Its satellite communications service Starlink generated $4.4 billion in operating income, while xAI lost $6.4 billion in operations. Some analysts, the AP reported, believe the IPO price significantly overvalues the company given that many of its stated goals — including Mars colonization and space-based data centers — depend on unproven technology and large future capital outlays.
Tesla, where Musk has served as CEO since 2008, went public in 2010 and currently carries a market capitalization of approximately $1.5 trillion. The company lost its position as the world's largest EV maker to China's BYD last year, and sales were affected by consumer boycotts tied to Musk's political activities, according to the AP. Sales have since partially recovered. Musk has said Tesla's long-term value lies in autonomous ride-hailing rather than direct vehicle sales. Tesla also produces humanoid robots and has been in the solar energy business since its acquisition of SolarCity, which Musk co-founded with two cousins.
