Dallas Mavericks finalizing deal to hire Michigan national champion coach Dusty May as NBA head coach

The Dallas Mavericks are finalizing a deal to hire Dusty May, head coach of national champion Michigan, as their NBA head coach, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. May led the Wolverines to their first NCAA championship since 1989 this past April, defeating UConn 69-63 to complete a 34-3 season. May replaces Jason Kidd, who was let go two weeks after Masai Ujiri was hired as president of basketball operations.

The Dallas Mavericks are finalizing an agreement with Dusty May to become their next head coach, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who spoke to the AP on Monday. May, 49, led the Michigan Wolverines to their first NCAA championship since 1989 this past April, beating UConn 69-63 and finishing the season 34-3.

May's path to Dallas runs through a career that began in college program support roles before he developed into one of the most successful coaches in college basketball over the past four seasons. He first head-coached at Florida Atlantic starting in 2018, posting four consecutive seasons just over .500 before leading the Owls to a 35-4 record and a Final Four appearance in 2022-23, a run that ended on a buzzer-beating shot by San Diego State's Lamont Butler. After one more season at FAU, May was hired by Michigan, where he replaced Juwan Howard following an 8-24 season — the program's worst since 1981-82. In two seasons, May went 64-13, won the Big Ten Tournament in year one, and won the national championship in year two.

His last four college seasons produced a 124-26 record, an .827 winning percentage that ranked third in major college men's basketball over that span, behind Houston's Kelvin Sampson (.861) and Duke's Jon Scheyer (.832).
