New York City and State Announce $495,000 Expansion of Abortion Access Hub on Dobbs Anniversary

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a combined $495,000 funding infusion to expand the New York City Abortion Access Hub's referral network. The announcement came on the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court's 2022 Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. The Hub is a confidential hotline that has handled more than 10,400 calls and nearly 5,000 live chat messages since its launch.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and New York State Department of Health are jointly providing $495,000 to extend the Hub's reach beyond New York City's five boroughs, according to press releases from both offices. The funding is intended to connect callers with abortion providers and support organizations statewide and to help patients access travel, financial support, and lodging associated with obtaining care.

Mayor Mamdani said in a statement that "four years ago, the disastrous Dobbs decision stripped away a fundamental right," and described the Hub as "a lifeline that connects people to abortion care, medication, transportation, lodging and support." Governor Hochul said the expansion was meant to signal that New York would not "let Washington Republicans take us backwards." The announcement was timed to the fourth anniversary of the Dobbs ruling.

Since its launch in the wake of the Dobbs decision, the Hub has fielded more than 10,400 calls and close to 5,000 live chat messages. More than half of callers seek medication abortion services, and one-quarter of callers come from outside New York State, according to the press releases.
