Paul Pelosi faces misdemeanor hit-and-run charge after striking parked car in Napa County

Paul Pelosi, 86, struck a legally parked, unoccupied vehicle Friday in Yountville, Napa County, California, briefly stopped, and then drove away, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office. No injuries were reported, alcohol was not a factor, and the sheriff's office recommended a misdemeanor charge for fleeing the scene of an accident. Pelosi was not arrested at the scene, which authorities described as standard procedure for this type of misdemeanor.

Paul Pelosi was driving his brown convertible in Yountville, a town in Napa County's wine region, when he struck a legally parked car, stopped briefly, and continued driving, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement released Saturday. A witness saw the collision and called 911. Deputies later located Pelosi and his vehicle — which Fox News reported had become disabled and was partially blocking a nearby roadway — roughly a quarter of a mile from the scene.

During the investigation, Pelosi told deputies he knew he had hit something but said he was unsure what caused the damage, according to both outlets. A preliminary alcohol screening device registered 0.00, and the sheriff's office ruled out driving under the influence. The case will be referred to the Napa County District Attorney's Office for review and possible misdemeanor prosecution.

The sheriff's office said it would also submit a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV, which both sources noted is a common practice for elderly drivers involved in collisions.
