Hamas announces dissolution of its Gaza government, calls for Palestinian technocratic committee to assume control
Hamas announced on Monday that it will dissolve its government in Gaza, with officials stating the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) — a body of Palestinian technocrats established under the US-brokered ceasefire framework — would assume governing responsibilities. The NCAG has remained in Cairo since its creation and has not yet entered Gaza or exercised authority there. Hamas's announcement made no mention of disarmament, which remains a key requirement under the second phase of the ceasefire deal.
Hamas's head of the Government Media Office, Ismail al-Thwabta, announced Monday that the group would dissolve its Gaza government committee and appoint a nationally accepted figure to oversee its work until the NCAG formally assumes control. Al-Thwabta made the statement at Al-Aqsa Martyr's Hospital in Gaza City, calling on mediators and the international community to "immediately accelerate the steps" for the NCAG to enter Gaza.
The NCAG was established by President Donald Trump's Board of Peace in January, composed of 13 commissioners including chief commissioner Ali Shaath, a civil engineer. Hamas had first indicated in mid-January that it planned to dissolve its authority once the NCAG took control. Gaza's government employs approximately 60,000 workers, whom Hamas said would be considered state employees able to continue working under the new committee.
The Board of Peace said it had "taken note" of Hamas's announcement but would wait for "actions, not promises," reiterating its position that "the core principle remains one authority, one law and one weapon" — a reference to the disarmament requirement Hamas has not addressed. The 20-point ceasefire plan has stalled on several fronts: Israel has carried out near-daily strikes in Gaza since the agreement went into effect in October, according to CNN, and Hamas has reasserted control in parts of the enclave not occupied by Israeli forces.
