Israel shared intelligence with the US warning of a new Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump
Israel recently shared intelligence with the United States indicating Iran had developed a new plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the matter. Trump acknowledged the threat publicly during the NATO summit in Turkey, stating he was "on every single one of their lists." Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone Thursday and agreed to continue coordination between the two countries.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Israel had passed intelligence to the United States indicating Iran was developing a fresh plan to assassinate President Trump. The report surfaced during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, where Trump made several public references to Iranian threats against his life.
Trump addressed the intelligence at a session with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and again at a closing news conference. "We took out their first set of leaders. We took out their second set of leaders. They want to take out the U.S. leader — me. I'm on every single one of their lists," Trump said. "These are evil, sick people. And we have to root out that cancer." The White House referred reporters to those remarks when asked about the Wall Street Journal report.
The intelligence emerged against a backdrop of public Iranian hostility toward Trump. At the funeral for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, mourners displayed banners reading "We Will Kill Trump," according to the Journal as cited by Fox News. Iran has publicly vowed for years to retaliate against Trump for the January 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.
