Nigel Farage triggers Clacton by-election amid finance scrutiny, drawing satirical and fringe challengers

Farage's resignation came after weeks of mounting questions over his political finances. Earlier this year it emerged that he had received an undisclosed gift worth more than $6 million from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne, a British billionaire who has lived in Thailand for two decades under the name "Chakrit Sakunkrit." Harborne has donated millions to Farage's Reform UK party, making him the single largest living donor to a British political party in history, according to NPR; that gift is now being investigated by Parliament's standards watchdog.

The scrutiny intensified earlier in July when it emerged that Farage had also failed to declare financial benefits — including private security, staff support and accommodation — provided by longtime aide George Cottrell, who has been found guilty of fraud in the United States. Both Farage and Reform UK denied that he breached any House of Commons rules in either case. On Tuesday, Farage told reporters he had "had enough" of media questions about his finances and insisted he had "done nothing wrong," then announced his resignation and said he would ask Clacton voters to "be the judge of my actions."

Britain's main parties declined to contest the seat. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Farage's resignation as a "desperate stunt," while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called the contest "fake" and accused Farage of throwing a "hissy fit." Chancellor Rachel Reeves wrote on X: "If he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him."
