Memphis Safe Task Force agent shot man during mental health crisis, family demands answers and body-camera footage

Jessica Neal called 911 on the night of May 20 after she saw her son, Jonah Neal, holding her handgun in her bedroom and attempting to take his own life. She ran outside to call for help. Three agents from Homeland Security Investigations — operating under Immigration and Customs Enforcement as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force — arrived at the home. Within minutes of entering, one agent fired a single shot. Jonah Neal died on scene.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the inquiry, said in its only public statement that task force members found Neal "with multiple weapons inside the residence" and that it was "not immediately clear" whether his death resulted from the agent's gunshot or from self-inflicted stab wounds. The TBI told NPR the investigation remains ongoing and that no further information was available. Neither the TBI nor the U.S. Marshals Service, which leads the task force, responded to questions about whether the HSI agent has been placed on administrative leave.

Neal's mother and grandmother, Cindy Leachman Aldridge, said in their first public interview that they find it difficult to believe a gunshot did not play a role in his death. They are asking to see any body-camera footage from that night. "I want answers," Jessica Neal said. "It was May 20th and I still don't know anything." The family noted that Jonah Neal had struggled with mental health and alcohol since his early twenties, and that his condition worsened after his father died the prior year. In the months before his death, he had been considering entering a rehabilitation center.
