Ex-wife of ICE agent who fatally shot Colombian man in Maine describes history of violence and racist behavior
An ICE officer fatally shot Joan Durán Guerrero, a Colombian man, four times during an attempted traffic stop in Biddeford, Maine on Monday. Ashley Brouillette told NPR that her ex-husband, David Brouillette, was the officer responsible, after he called her asking her to vouch for his character. ICE said it would not confirm or deny whether Brouillette was the officer involved, but stated the officer has "nearly a decade of federal law enforcement experience with required training."
Ashley Brouillette told NPR she learned her ex-husband David Brouillette was the ICE officer who shot Joan Durán Guerrero when Brouillette called her on Wednesday, asking her to speak positively about his character. She said she refused, telling him she would not lie on his behalf or conceal a history of abuse she described from their marriage, which lasted from 2007 to 2009.
Ashley Brouillette described multiple incidents of violence during the marriage, including one in which she said David Brouillette entered the bathroom while she was showering, pointed a gun at her, and threatened to kill her. There are no police reports corroborating that specific account; she said she recanted her complaints on multiple occasions because he intimidated her. NPR obtained a voicemail from November, recorded when Ashley had filed a restraining order, in which David Brouillette slurs his speech and says she and the women in her family "should have your throats cut," while also stating he was not making a direct threat.
Scott Collins, who NPR identified as David Brouillette's best friend in high school in Maine and a witness in the divorce proceedings, said Brouillette "had a bad tendency of going out and looking for fights" and used anti-Black racial slurs in high school. Ashley Brouillette said Brouillette's high school nickname was "White Boy David" and said she worries racism may have played a role in Durán Guerrero's death. David's attorneys said Collins and Brouillette "were once friends, but their relationship ended because Mr. Collins was jealous of Mr. Brouillette's successful career."
