Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation as India's education minister on Saturday, posting the news on X after weeks of protests, hunger strikes, and sit-ins organized by the Cockroach Janta Party — a youth-led movement demanding accountability over allegations that entrance exams for prestigious medical schools had been leaked and sold, forcing millions of students to retake tests.
The CJP emerged in May after comments by India's chief justice were widely interpreted as comparing unemployed young people to "cockroaches," according to CNN. Founded by Boston University graduate Abhijeet Dipke, what began as an online meme grew into a nationwide protest movement uniting students, professionals, and families around demands for exam reform, employment opportunities, and government accountability. AP reported that among the movement's remaining demands were compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the exam leaks, and a guarantee that no legal action would be taken against protest participants.
Modi's government had made earlier attempts to ease tensions, including announcing fast-track courts for exam paper leak cases and pledging legislation to strengthen anti-cheating measures. Those steps failed to satisfy protesters, AP reported. Modi issued his first public response to the demonstrations on Thursday — weeks after they began — saying those responsible for the paper leaks had been arrested. CNN noted he had previously neither mentioned nor publicly recognized the protests.
