Vehicle rams Berlin Pride crowd, killing one and injuring 16; suspect with links to Islamist circles sought

A white van entered Tiergarten Park in Berlin around 10 p.m. local time on Saturday, striking several people before colliding with a tree, according to Berlin police as reported by the Associated Press. Berlin's fire service said one woman was killed, three sustained life-threatening injuries, eight were seriously injured, and five had slight injuries. Police also reported that several people were stabbed following the vehicle attack. The battered van could still be seen against the tree at the scene on Sunday morning.

German authorities on Sunday issued a wanted notice for 21-year-old Abdul B., describing him as known to police and connected to Islamic circles in Berlin. Police spokesperson Florian Nath, as quoted by the AP, said investigators had "no information on his specific motives" at the time. A search of an apartment in Berlin's Schöneberg district in the early hours of Sunday found no one there. Police warned the public not to approach the suspect and to call 110 immediately if he was spotted.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the incident as "a heinous act" and "an attack on our society," writing on X that Germany "loves freedom—and we will preserve and defend that," as reported by NPR and the AP. Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, called it "an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society" and expressed confidence in authorities to investigate with urgency.
