Three killed, four wounded in shooting at Seattle food festival near Space Needle
Three people were killed and four others were wounded, including a toddler, in a shooting Sunday evening at the Bite of Seattle food festival near the base of the Space Needle. Police arrested one suspect and were searching for a second, while Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis said there was no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators believe the two suspects were shooting at each other.
The shooting took place around 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle, described by NPR's KUOW affiliate as one of the city's largest food festivals and a popular event for families. Two guns were recovered at the scene. Acting Chief Davis described the suspect in custody as a "young person," according to NPR.
Hundreds of people were in attendance when gunfire broke out. Attendees scrambled to flee the area, with some witnesses describing the scene as similar to a stampede, according to KUOW reporter Casey Martin. One carnival game worker told NPR that they helped children and adults leap over a fence to escape.
Reuters reported that a toddler was among the four people wounded, a detail that also appeared in the AP's coverage. One suspect surrendered at the scene while the other fled; Davis told reporters Sunday night that while the second suspect remained at large, police did not believe there was an immediate ongoing danger to the public.
