Massachusetts GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue releases healthcare plan focused on cost reduction and expanded access
Mike Minogue, a Republican candidate for governor of Massachusetts and former CEO of medical device company Abiomed, unveiled a healthcare plan aimed at lowering costs and expanding access across the state. Minogue won the Massachusetts GOP endorsement at the party's state convention in Worcester and is expected to win the Republican primary on September 1, where he would face incumbent Democratic Governor Maura Healey. Massachusetts is noted for having some of the highest healthcare costs in the country alongside some of its most prominent hospital systems.
Mike Minogue, a combat veteran and former longtime medical device CEO, announced his "patients-first" healthcare platform Wednesday as part of his Republican bid to unseat incumbent Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. The plan centers on reducing regulatory burdens on physicians and nurses, expanding outpatient and surgery centers outside of Boston, and introducing more flexible insurance options paired with health savings accounts.
Minogue identified a geographic disparity in healthcare access as a central problem in Massachusetts, noting that residents in communities outside the Boston metro area face lengthy drives to receive care. He cited the closure of Norwood Hospital as an example, saying patients in that area now face a drive of more than 55 minutes to reach cardiac care in Boston.
On cost, Minogue said Massachusetts regulations effectively concentrate high-cost procedures in Boston-area hospitals by limiting the number of outpatient clinics and surgery centers statewide. He described his approach as shifting care to lower-overhead outpatient settings and giving patients more flexibility to select their own coverage, while capping catastrophic out-of-pocket costs. Drawing on his experience as a CEO who purchased employee health insurance for 19 years, he said premiums rose by double digits every year and characterized the current system as fiscally unsustainable.
