Angie Nixon defeats Alex Vindman in Florida Democratic Senate primary upset
Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in Tuesday's Democratic Senate primary, pulling off a significant upset despite Vindman's substantial fundraising advantage. Nixon will advance to the general election in November to face Trump-backed Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL) for the seat previously held by Marco Rubio. The race fills Rubio's former seat, which he vacated to join the Trump administration; the winner will serve through the end of his term before the seat is contested again in 2028.

Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and former Director of European Affairs for the National Security Council, entered the primary as the race's most nationally recognized Democrat. He raised approximately $14.6 million in campaign receipts through June 30, compared to roughly $625,000 for Nixon over the same period — a fundraising ratio Fox News described as more than 20 to 1. The Washington Examiner reported Vindman raised 16 times more than Nixon, citing figures of $16 million to less than $1 million.
Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat first elected to the Florida House in 2020, built her political career through community and labor organizing. The SEIU identified her as having served as state field director for SEIU Florida and as director of the Florida Public Service Union's Higher Education Campaign. In a Fox News interview before the primary, Nixon said she supported abolishing ICE, freezing rents nationwide for at least one year, and Medicare for all, while declining to commit to supporting Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
Nixon's affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America drew attention during the race. Nixon told a public radio outlet in July that she was a DSA member, but DSA officials told Fox News on primary night that she had previously belonged to a local chapter and had unsuccessfully sought its endorsement, with her current membership status described as unclear. Fox News said it reached out to Nixon's campaign for clarification.
