NASA Administrator Isaacman Backs Orbital Data Centers as Alternative to Ground-Based AI Infrastructure
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman publicly endorsed the concept of placing solar-powered AI data centers in Earth orbit, saying space-based facilities could avoid competing for land, water, and grid capacity. Isaacman made the remarks in an interview with Nexstar DC. Several private companies, including Google, SpaceX, and startup Starcloud, are already pursuing orbital computing projects.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Wednesday that moving AI data centers into Earth orbit could sidestep the public backlash and resource demands associated with ground-based facilities. "Let's take our data centers, put them in Earth orbit, take advantage of that free fusion reactor that's out there for us," Isaacman said in an interview with Nexstar DC, referring to solar energy available in space.
The proposal emerges against a backdrop of growing public opposition to terrestrial data center construction. A Fox News poll cited in that outlet's coverage found 70% of voters oppose building AI data centers in their own communities, with 79% saying construction should slow to address environmental and community concerns rather than proceed quickly to stay competitive with China. Half of those opposed cited environmental issues — including energy and water use, pollution, and noise — as their primary concern.
The concept faces significant engineering obstacles. AI chips generate substantial heat, which orbital facilities would need to dissipate through large radiators. Operators would also require low-cost and reliable launches, radiation-hardened hardware, and laser communication links fast enough to connect thousands of computers distributed across orbit.
