NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Set to Launch August 30

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch on August 30. The $4.3-billion observatory is named for NASA's first chief astronomer and is designed to study dark energy, survey the Milky Way, and detect planets around distant stars through gravitational microlensing.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has an origin that sets it apart from conventional NASA projects. According to NPR, the observatory began when the National Reconnaissance Office contacted NASA roughly 15 years ago, offering a surveillance satellite sitting unused in a hangar. NASA accepted, modified the hardware extensively, and the repurposed instrument is now set to become the agency's next major space observatory.

Roman's primary scientific targets include Type Ia supernovas — exploding stars used as cosmological measuring sticks — which helped reveal dark energy, the mysterious force driving the universe's expansion. That discovery earned the Nobel Prize in 2011. Cosmologist Daniel Scolnic of Duke University told NPR that finding more of these supernovas would sharpen understanding of that expansion, and that Roman could determine whether the current standard cosmological model is correct or in need of revision.

The telescope is also designed to survey all stars in the Milky Way in approximately one month — a task that NPR reported would take roughly a century using the Hubble Space Telescope. Project scientist Julie McEnery explained that while Roman has broadly similar sensitivity and resolution to Hubble, its wide-field design allows it to catalog large portions of the sky far more quickly. Those catalogs, McEnery said, will be publicly accessible, not limited to academic researchers.
