Trump Administration Reports Blocking $1.6 Billion in Suspected Medicare Lab Payment Fraud

Federal officials say the Trump administration has blocked or recovered more than $1.6 billion in potentially improper Medicare laboratory payments since January 2025. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said 157 lab providers were removed from the Medicare program for alleged fraud, with $732 million in payments tied to those providers. CMS said the suspected improper billing involved tests never performed, unnecessary tests, and services billed at inflated rates.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced that, since President Trump returned to office, federal officials and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud have blocked or clawed back more than $1.6 billion in potentially improper Medicare laboratory payments. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated that labs suspected of billing for services never rendered "drains the Medicare Trust Fund and diverts resources away from beneficiaries who need them."

Of the $1.6 billion total, CMS reported that more than $500 million in suspected fraudulent payments were stopped through 185 payment suspensions following investigations into 600 labs. The agency said it also recovered more than $276 million in overpayments from 442 suspect labs, and that $127 million in potentially fraudulent payments was prevented after 85 cases were referred to law enforcement.

CMS described its use of artificial intelligence and other technology to identify unusual billing patterns across Medicare claims. The agency said the technology can flag suspicious claims for review before payment is issued, allowing CMS to hold, reject, or deny claims proactively rather than seeking recovery after the fact.
