Trump nominates Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the FDA, drawing scrutiny from MAHA allies

President Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration, a pick that has drawn public criticism from within the Make America Healthy Again coalition that was a prominent feature of Trump's second-term health agenda.

The Washington Examiner published an opinion piece by conservative writer Ericka Andersen arguing that Overton lacks the qualifications for the role, citing her absence of experience in food policy or food safety regulation. Andersen described Overton's professional history as centered on clinical medicine and White House policymaking rather than FDA management or food regulation, writing that "a medical degree is not a substitute for relevant experience."

Beyond questions of credentials, Andersen described Overton as having been "a source of resistance rather than momentum" on MAHA priorities during her time inside the administration. The piece cited a report from The Atlantic in which a person who worked with Overton described her as "controlled opposition" to the administration's health agenda. Andersen also noted that MAHA-aligned advocates Alex Clark and Kelly Ryerson had publicly criticized the nomination, with Clark reportedly calling it the "nail in the coffin for MAHA."
