Active shooting at downtown Minneapolis apartment building kills three, wounds five including two officers
A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday left three people dead, including the suspected shooter, and five others wounded by gunfire. Two of the wounded were Minneapolis police officers. All three officers who were injured — two by gunfire and one by other means — were reported to be in stable condition and expected to make full recoveries.
A 911 call reporting shots fired at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building came in just after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson. Officers were inside the building within two minutes and quickly located victims. Following the sound of additional gunshots, officers ascended to a higher floor where they encountered what Peterson described as "a haze that significantly limited their visibility." He did not provide additional details about the haze.
One officer was shot in the leg and a second was shot twice in the abdomen, Peterson said. A third officer sustained unspecified other injuries. All three were treated at Hennepin County Medical Center, which also received four additional patients, bringing its total intake to seven. Police Sgt. Garrett Parten said it was not immediately clear how the suspected shooter died.
Two civilian victims were killed — one at the scene and one after arriving at the hospital, according to Peterson. Authorities did not release the identity or background of the suspected shooter, though they said they were familiar with the person prior to the shooting.
