Anthropic releases interactive economic model to explore AI's potential effects on U.S. growth and employment
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, has released an interactive tool that lets users explore how artificial intelligence might affect the U.S. economy under a range of scenarios. The tool's outcomes span from modest productivity gains with little disruption to workers, to a situation where GDP grows at more than seven times its current pace alongside an unemployment rate approaching 14%. Anthropic's authors state they do not offer a prediction of which scenario is most likely.
Anthropic has published an interactive economic modeling tool designed to let users set their own assumptions about how capable, flexible, and widely adopted AI becomes, and then observe the projected macroeconomic results. The scenarios range from what the company describes as a "modest change" path — where AI makes changes around the margins of a normal economy — to an "extreme" scenario the authors say would go "beyond any event in history, both in terms of magnitudes and in terms of the speed at which change happens."
In the extreme scenario modeled by the tool, GDP grows at more than seven times its current pace, but nearly 14% of workers lose their jobs to AI, with fewer than half of those displaced workers finding new employment. The more moderate scenarios project a meaningful productivity boost with limited effects on employment.
Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, speaking to NPR, described his own position as somewhere between the optimistic and cautious poles. "I think the technology will keep developing at a very, very fast and sustained rate but diffusion of the technology will likely be more challenging than people think," Clark said. He added that policymakers should prepare to act: "If you end up with this level of GDP growth, you have moves available to you as a policymaker that are unimaginable today."
