Trump announces U.S. will not strike Iran before November midterm elections
President Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday that the United States will not conduct military strikes against Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The announcement came in response to reports that the Pentagon had directed U.S. Central Command to prepare for potential major combat operations. Trump stated in the post that a naval blockade remains in place and reiterated that Iran will not be permitted to develop a nuclear weapon.

President Trump's Truth Social post, published Thursday, stated: "We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran. I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect … we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd. IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!"
The post followed reporting that the Pentagon had ordered U.S. Central Command to prepare for more significant combat operations. Trump offered statistics in his message, citing 22 million barrels of oil transiting the Strait of Hormuz in a single night while asserting that none of it came from or was destined for Iran, a claim not independently verified in the sources reviewed.
NPR's political analyst Domenico Montanaro described the announcement as "a bit surprising because ideally, he wouldn't want to make those kinds of promises during a war." Montanaro said the post signals Trump's awareness that the ongoing conflict has been "politically bad for his party ahead of elections," and that deeper military involvement would be a difficult case to make with the American public, including his own base.
