Former OpenAI engineer accused of planting listening devices had Saudi royal contacts; family fled US after arrest
Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national and former OpenAI engineer, was arrested by the FBI on October 9, 2026, and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications after prosecutors say he concealed a recording device behind a television in an executive conference room. Federal prosecutors filed a detention memo Sunday revealing that Saudi government officials helped arrange travel for his wife and infant son, who departed San Francisco roughly 36 hours after his arrest. Prosecutors are asking a judge to detain Alfozan pending trial, arguing he is a serious flight risk and poses an ongoing danger to the community.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a legal permanent resident earning $385,000 annually and holding a $2.2 million equity grant at OpenAI, spent weeks researching how to build an encrypted recording device with live-listening capabilities, according to a federal detention filing. Prosecutors say he used an internal OpenAI tool to identify executive meeting rooms before concealing a customized audio recorder behind a television in a conference room in late September. That room regularly hosted leadership meetings, product and technical discussions, and briefings with government officials and business partners, prosecutors said.
A second similar recorder was discovered inside a bag Alfozan left in a printer room, according to prosecutors. Searches of his home and electronic devices uncovered additional matching components and photographs that appeared to show reconnaissance of other OpenAI locations, including another conference room described as being used for sensitive meetings.
Investigators say Alfozan showed particular interest in OpenAI's dealings with Saudi Arabia. His browsing history showed he accessed a folder titled "Saudi Gov Docs" on October 4, 2026, and searched an internal tool for engagements involving Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Searches included planned OpenAI visits to Saudi Arabia, an upcoming visit by the Saudi ministry, and a meeting labeled "HUMAIN x MCIT @OpenAI," according to the filing.
